It's Friday and I wanted to share two new videos with you to end the week with - from Baltimore band Ponytail and Ottawa's The Acorn (in case you haven't see them yet):
The other is Ottawa band The Acorn's video for "The Flood Pt.1", directed by Christopher Mills (Broken Social Scene, Modest Mouse, Interpol), which aired on MTV2 Subterranean last week! Glory Hope Mountain (Paper Bag) is about Rolf's mother Gloria and her life story. The video compliments the meaning behind the album well. http://www.paperbagrecords.com/qt_videos/ACORN-THE-FLOOD-PT1-640×360.mov
I'd love to know what you think of the videos when you have a chance. If you'd like to set up an interview with Ponytail or The Acorn, or obtain a review copy let me know. Both bands are heading out on tour at the end of the month so keep an eye out! **************************************************** Listen to Ponytail's Single "Celebrate the Body Electric (It Came From an Angel)" here: http://www.nowwearefree.com/press/ponytail.html

VICE RECORDS TO RELEASE CHROMEO FANCY FOOTWORK: DELUXE EDITION ON JUNE 17th
Chromeo: once an underground best kept secret, now an Earth-sweeping cultural phenomenon responsible for bringing together a massive union of indie trendsters, dance muggers, gay students, hip hoppers, music blogging nerds and nubile girls. They attract the attention of celebrities like those with the surname Hilton (Paris, Perez), Hall and Oates (who sought out a collaboration) and Kanye West (who regularly name checks them on his blog). The revolutionary MTV program 52/52 took an in depth look at Chromeo and not surprisingly, fell in love. Since the beginning of the year, they've sold out shows in LA (El Rey), New York (Bowery Ballroom, twice), Manchester (Academy), London (KoKo's), and have just completed a triumphant homecoming tour in Canada. Chromeo's appearance on ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live gave America a chance to experience the moog riffs, talk boxes and heartfelt loverboy lyrics that have been sorely missing in the milieu of contemporary music. All the key American festivals like Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Coachella and All Points West have come calling hoping to catch some Chromeo magic. Now, the good news:
VICE Records announces the release of Chromeo - Fancy Footwork: Deluxe Edition. Disc one is the essential original recording. Disc two contains remixes by Lifelike, MSTRKRFT, DFA, Crookers and more. 12-PIECE PSYCHEDELIC SOUL BIG BAND EXPLODES THEIR MUSICAL DYNAMITE ALL OVER THE WORLD 6/17/08 VICE Records is proud to announce the signing of the 12-piece psychedelic soul big band explosion King Khan and The Shrines, and the release of The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines on June 17. Nothing will get you ready for sunburn season quicker than a blast of this garage soul inferno, equal parts Lenny Kaye-era Nuggets, James Brown soul revue and Sun Ra freak session. Sexual voodoo, secret societies and hallucinogenic transcendence all conspire over rampant garage-psych riffs and Muscle Shoals horns with the blue-eyed tear drops and desperate wail of King Khan testifying like a true motherfuckear.
Joining King Khan and the Shrines line-up includes 60 year old Chicagoan Ron Streeter (live-percussionist for Curtis Mayfield, Stevie Wonder, and many other Soul legends), and a horn section consisting of Simon Wojan (the mastermind behind Kranky Records recording artists Cloudland Canyon), Ben Ra (Germany's John Coltrane), and famous French rockabilly saxophonist Big Fred Rollercoaster. The rhythm section of the Sensational Shrines has been called "a German/French version of the Freak Brothers".
Originally sighted in Montreal's Spaceshits, and sometimes appearing as the semi-naked half of the King Khan & BBQ Show, King Khan moved to Berlin in 1999 where he and the Shrines have been spreading their love like peanut butter through a flurry of full-lengths, EPs, singles, and hard-to-find vinyl releases. Their first album THREE HAIRS & YOU'RE MINE was produced by Liam Watson at the legendary Toe Rag Studios in London and released in 2002. A second full-length, MR. SUPERNATURAL, followed in 2004. Their third full-length WHAT IS?! received critical acclaim all over the world and landed at #33 in Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of 2007. In between have been French-only releases, a split with the Dirtbombs, 7"s, 10"s, and more. The Supreme Genius of King Khan and The Shrines collects the cream of this very creamy crop and present the greatest hits of his greatest hits, all available for the first time ever in America.
Look for the first-ever King Khan and The Shrines US tour this July and August. Dates to come.

LINER NOTES by Jared Swilley of The Black Lips: The first time I crossed paths with King Khan and the Shrines was on a cold foggy day in London. The gloomy weather was fitting as I'd lost my passport, money, and most of my personal effects at the previous night's concert. My spirits were down and I was in desperate need of salvation. As I sat wallowing in sorrow outside of the club I suddenly felt a supernatural calling that drew me in like a rat following the Pied Piper. What followed was to this day one of the best shows I have ever witnessed. The scene inside was nothing short of insanity. Horns were blaring that could have taken down the walls of Jericho, the drums pounding a rhythm deep into my heart, guitars, bass and organ wailing and King Khan at the epicenter of it all commanding the stage like a soul-soaked shaman. I was spellbound, moved, shaken, stirred and cured - not unlike what I hear religious experiences are like. I left the show a saved and converted man. I had experienced Supreme Genius. Hi, Wanted to let you know about a new CD from The Butcher's Boy out of Chicago. I attached a press release below. Don't hesitate to contact me for a copy of the full length. I didn't see your address on your site.
Grape Juice Records announces Butcher's Boy release
Chicago, IL - April 8, 2008 - After a year of building a devout following with their live performances, the Butcher's Boy has the release of their debut LP finally in sight. Grape Juice Records announced today that the release date for the album, Skin and Bones, is officially slated for May 20th. The release party will take place a couple days before that, on May 17th at the Horseshoe in Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood.
"Skin and Bones" was recorded in August 2007 by Neil Strauch at Engine Studios in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. They took a live approach to the recording, recording all core instruments and vocals at the same time. The band preferred the live approach because it allows them to show listeners their raw yet refined sound when they're not out seeing them live.
The Butcher's Boy started as a way for songwriter Jeremy Miller to put a full band behind his songs. All the pieces were in place after Miller's longtime friend and former bandmate, JJ Evans, moved back to Chicago after finishing school in New York. Miller then asked Chicago musicians Joe Pug and Ian Tsan to fill out the rhythm section and the band quickly began playing shows in Chicago at The Beat Kitchen, The Abbey, Belmont Arts and Music Festival and Martyrs, to name a few.
1) The Crying Shame 2) Spinnin? In It 3) Heart Gone Wrong 4) Holy Holy 5) Skin and Bones 6) Strange Days 7) Put on Your Jacket Glory Days 9) Walk Away 10) Who Knows 11) Wicked on Broadway 12) You Break It You Buy It
CD Release Party Saturday May 17th! @ The Horseshoe 4115 N. Lincoln Ave. 773-248-1366

UK Pop Anomalies The Chap Sign To Ghostly International Third Album Mega Breakfast out July 1 mp3 Download "They Have a Name"
UK's bizzaro-electro-rock sensation The Chap has signed to beloved electronic superlabel Ghostly International. The Chap is a three/four/five piece modern pop group based in North London. After receiving critical acclaim from more than a few worthy individuals for their first two albums, The Chap serve up their third release, the ambitious Mega Breakfast, which will be released in the US on July 1st.
The Chap started out with very limited equipment (one microphone, etc.) during the making of their debut album The Horse, a surreal classic of lo-fi pomposity. The follow-up, Ham, was recorded with four microphones instead of one and journeyed into more "grown-up" territory. With their third effort, the group continues to break new ground, using abstract and somewhat jarring samples that result in perfectly executed punctuations over danceable electro-beats. Anthemic, uniquely British refrains lasso it all together for a cohesive and bizarrely original release, surely to become a Mega Breakfast of Champions.
The Chap is comprised of these people: Claire Hope (keyboards, vocals); Johannes von Weizsacker (guitar, vocals, computer, cello), Panos Ghikas (bass, violin, guitar, computer, vocals) and Keith Duncan (Drums). They are and always have been about the psychological unease of despising and loving things at the same time. Those things, in particular, may be pop culture, the media world and their interactions; yet the Chap wish to convey a more general, deliciously terrifying sense of destabilisation, surprise and wonder.
Kids at gigs have frequently said the Chap "are amazing" and "look like teachers." John Peel liked them too. The Chap Press Quotes:
"The Chap give birth to freakish Dadaist disco babies - you'll love it!" - NME
"Like Underworld if they'd decided to be a lo-fi rock and roll combo instead of a stadium selling dance act…it is stunning." - VICE (UK) "It's cool and dry, and it's all over the place as well. It's sonically unpredictable and harmonically lopsided, yet almost infuriatingly catchy. It's fractured and jerky, but smoothly enticing at the same time. It's cerebral and detached in its methodology but visceral in its impact. Most of all, it's fantastic fun. Serious fun." - The Wire
"The Chap "Surgery" - There are people who have to cut into people's bodies every day. It's their job, and it's ultimately sort of mundane. They go inside of bodies, see things that may only be viewed one time by the naked eye, but it's all very impersonal despite the terrifying intimacy of the activity. It's a little weird, and The Chap have sorta written a song about it, and it is about as chilly, sterile, and sleek as a scalpel." - Fluxblog
"The Chap are both gear and fab!" - John Peel

You and I In The Kaleidoscope
(Self-Released)
INFO
INFO
Kites mastermind Jean-Philip Grobler has been toiling away at his new EP You and I in the Kaleidoscope for nigh on three years. “I wanted the four tracks on the EP to represent everything that to me is beautiful about pop music, and that took a lot longer than I thought,” he laughs. With …Kaleidoscope, Jean has gone beyond creating just beautiful pop music. He’s crafted a perfect pop record that is irresistibly catchy, while still being able to surprise you at every turn. The guitars are often loud and big, but they’re juxtaposed by Jean's layered, almost silk-like vocals and counter melodies. A delicate glockenspiel melody floating above a guitar rock apocalypse, fearing for its’ life. The Clash performing the Carmina Burana. A heartbreaking James Bond love scene soundtrack, covered by The Cure and produced by Phil Spektor. Yes, classifications can be deceiving. There is incredible intimacy and tenderness in these four songs, as in the heart-wrenching “Game of Love and War,” but just as you're about to shed a tear, “Heroes and Villains” comes along blazing all of its ominous dance-rock cannons. For every inch of inspired pop-majesty on this EP, there are mountains of texture and aural-delicacies aplenty. Whether it be the Ska-meets-Baroque middle section of “Easy Now,” or the delicate melancholy of “Daylight”’s breakdown, the four tracks on …Kaleidoscope contain enough auditory bliss to fill an entire sugar refinery. Kites will be performing their lush dream-pop in NYC on April 8th at The Annex. Be sure to make it out!

Having a good week so far? Mine's getting pretty show-tastic! Everyone and their brother is playing in Nashville this weekend, and next Saturday I'm going to see Royal Bangs!!! I can't wait. I've had "Cat Swallow" (http://www.piratepirate.com/mp3s/catswallow.mp3) stuck in my head ever since they gave it up for download. Have you given it a listen yet? It really lives up to their self-proclaimed "wizard fresh" sound, or as Kevin Crowe called it "robo-rhythmic onslaught." It's an art-electro-tech-dance-analog-rock extravaganza. Audio Eagle, the label started by The Black Keys' drummer, Patrick Carney, is putting out the new Royal Bangs release, We Breed Champions, in May (the one Cat Swallow is on).
Think you might be up for posting "Cat Swallow"? Did you want a digital copy of the album? Just say the word and I'll send it over.
